Thanksgiving Week

I am thankful for the opportunity to interact with your children every day-they are an outstanding bunch of young adults.

Monday: We will create the citation page for our research papers using Noodletools. Students are expected to come to class with the final draft of their paper (including the cover page) and their research sources.

Tuesday: Students will extract DNA from strawberries. The research paper is due today.

Happy turkey day to all!

Week of November 16-20

This week we will wrap up our unit on genetics and put the finishing touches on our research papers. The genetics unit test will be Friday. Research papers are due Tuesday, November 24th. If you will be out of town, please turn your paper in BEFORE you leave.

Monday-Class notes on DNA structure. Home learning: Rough draft of paper due Wednesday. Students will also be given a unit study guide. This is optional but highly recommended.

Tuesday-Teams will design and solve Punnet square practice problems. Home learning: Rough draft of research paper due tomorrow!

Wednesday-Peer review of research papers. Home learning: Adult edited version of research paper due Friday. Unit test on Friday.

Thursday-Review games. Home learning: Study for unit test and get your research paper edited by an adult (due tomorrow).

Friday-Unit test. Adult edited rough draft due today!!

Week of November 9-13

This week we continue our studies of genetics and begin writing our research papers. By the end of the week, all students should have begun writing the body of their papers.

Monday: Breeding larkeys online. Homework: Develop 3 main points for research paper.

Tuesday: Making a human face activity. Homework: Complete finding 3+ research sources.

Wednesday: Work on papers. Homework: Study for quiz tomorrow.

Thursday: Quiz!

Friday: Punnett Square practice.

Week of November 2-6

This week we start a new quarter as well as a new unit and begin our studies in the field of genetics. Included in this unit will be students’ first foray into writing research papers. Each student will research a genetic disorder and write a 5 paragraph paper about that disorder. We will have some class time embedded to complete this project, but please be advised that there will also be some home work required as well. There will NOT be any additional homework other than the research paper.Tuesday and Wednesday will be parent/student/teacher conferences. I hope to see you all there.

Monday: Introduction to Mendelian genetics

Tuesday: Mendel and the scientific method

Wednesday: Punnett squares- Homework: choose a genetic disorder for research paper.

Thursday: Research practices in the Tech Garden- Homework for Monday: find three sources for research paper.

Friday: No school:)

Week of 10/26 to 10/30

This week we will wrap up our unit on cells as well as the first quarter of school. The week looks like this:

Monday: Diffusion and osmosis. Home learning: complete Egg lab conclusion.

Tuesday: Cell study pods. Home learning: study for unit test Thursday.

Wednesday: Review games. Home learning: study for unit test tomorrow.

Thursday: Unit test

Friday: Quarterly Recognition (early release schedule). Notebook maintenance.

Week of October 19-23

This week we will continue our study of the cell by focusing on the processes that occur inside the cell. In addition, we will practice strategies for reading expository texts and model effective note-taking.

Monday- Chapter 4.3 “The Cell Cycle” Michelle Rooks will model expository text reading and note-taking. Start mitosis lab.

Tuesday- Complete mitosis lab. Homework: draw the stages of mitosis and tell what is happening in each stage.

Wednesday- Chapter 4.1″Exchange with the Environment” Students will explore diffusion and osmosis. Class note-taking followed by mini lab.

Thursday- Chapter 4.2 “Cell Energy” Intro to photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Homework: create a diagram that compares photosynthesis and cellular respiration. What is the connection between these two processes?

Friday- Elodea leaf lab.

Week of 10/13 to 10/16

This week students will design a facility of their choice (a mall, an amusement park, an airport). As they create this facility, they will have to compare the function of parts of the facility to the function of cell organelles. They will then create a brochure “selling” their facility. All of this will be done electronically. We will also be continuing our “Egg Lab” to explore diffusion and osmosis. The week will look like this:

Monday: No school for students:)

Tuesday: Select a facility. Create analogy with cell organelles. Write and edit text for each aspect of the facility.  Phase II of the egg lab. Homework: complete text and editing.

Wednesday: Set up brochure. Select pictures for brochure (with citations).

Thursday: Put brochure together. Phase III of egg lab.

Friday: “Sell” facility to class through short presentation.
